New Options Abound in Resilient Flooring
Many families have a need for flooring that fits in a tight budget and performs with lots of everyday traffic. With new technologies, resilient luxury vinyl floors look great, work hard, and can be practical alternative to natural materials.
Two types of vinyl are frequently used in homes today - Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) and Rigid Core/WPC. These are both designed to replicate other hard surface flooring materials such as stone or wood, while providing the benefits of resilient flooring. With the wide variety of designs and colors, available in plank and tile sizes, luxury vinyl is the fastest growing option in today’s flooring market.
The benefits of luxury vinyl include comfort, moisture resistance and affordability. Vinyl provides a softer surface than wood or stone, and is comfortable underfoot. Many Rigid Core/WPC options also include attached pads on the back that help reduce sound. Vinyl is waterproof so it guards against everyday mishaps, ideal for use in kitchens and bathrooms. While traditional wood and stone floors also provide durability, vinyl typically has a much lower cost, to help keep busy families on budget.
Luxury vinyl in constructed in layers. The foundation is a stability layer that keeps the product laying flat and resists indentation. LVT uses a thinner, more flexible PVC core, whereas Rigid Core/WPC uses a thicker, sturdier composite core. Over that is placed a photographic printed film, which adds the depth and realism of natural materials. The top layer is a clear vinyl that protects the floor from everyday wear and tear. Through the use of heat and pressure, the layers are fully bonded together for strength and durability.
Finally, installation of luxury vinyl can be faster than other floors, especially tile. LVT needs to be acclimated to living temperature, and subfloors still need to be properly prepared. Traditional LVT includes glue down or click-lock installation, while most Rigid Core/WPC uses a floating click-lock system that makes DIY easy. Resilient luxury vinyl can create an authentic natural look in your home, with the performance and price point busy families need.
